Madrid, Spain, May 23, 2013 - The design for the houses will be unveiled in October in Tokyo, and construction could get underway in 2014.

The Spanish designer Xavier Mariscal is returning to Japan after having been commissioned by a Japanese architecture studio to design aprototype for single family homes in Tokyo and its outlying areas. Up to 100 three-bedroomed homes are scheduled to be built in the prefectures of Tokyo and Kanagawa, priced at around €300,000.

The designer, famous for having created Cobi, the mascot of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, said “this will mean combining the Mediterranean and Japanese ways of living”, adding that: “It will be like what Ferran Adrià does – a job in which you fuse the Mediterranean and Japanese styles and interpretations of light, water and materials”.

Japan is not uncharted territory for Mariscal, as he has worked in the country since the 1980s in various fields such as architecture, textiles and product design. The Spanish designer’s latest idea with this new Japanese venture arose a year ago thanks to the construction and architecture firm Tatsumi Planning, which wants to use the Valencian’s prototype to build its own range of homes.

Mariscal and his team have travelled to Japan, where they are already working with the construction company and its architects to adapt the design to what Japanese people want since, as the designer says, “we can’t impose a lifestyle on them”.

The priority for Mariscal – who is very excited about the project – is for the homes to be liveable and sustainable, with a strong focus on energy use. “Being able to design something that people are going to live in and enjoy” is an added bonus, he added
