Thats What the Old Ones Says Tells the Story of Christianity and American Indians

By Catherine Rayburn-Trobaugh on November 03 2014 | 389 Views

Word Branch Publishing releases the controversial book during Native American Heritage Month.

Marble, NC, November 03, 2014 -- Chief Joseph RiverWind tells a tale of historical events, Christian theology and Native folklore to create a fascinating and thought-provoking treatise. Told in traditional storytelling fashion, Chief RiverWind weaves a captivating account of the Native American’s relationship with Christianity and spirituality.

RiverWind makes it apparent that even in his own personal history that the relationship between indigenous people and Christianity is often contemptuous and violent. He recounts Christopher Columbus bloody first contact with RiverWinds own people, the Tainos of the Caribbean, as well as acts by the church in North America that led the near eradication of cultures.

While acknowledging atrocities, RiverWind separates the word of God from the deeds to form powerful connections between scripture and Native American history and folklore. The exposition is framed by Chief RiverWinds campfire conversations with a friend: PipeCarier, an Oglala Sioux veteran who served in Iraq. As they exchange stories, RiverWind intertwines research and scripture quotes to create a totally readable and mesmerizing account.

RiverWind felt compelled to write the book to help preserve some of the folklore and history that he had grown up with and to let people know that being Native and Christian were not exclusive of each other. Betrayal, love, reconciliation, unity, sacrifice, joy, peace, history, the perseverance of the human spirit, and the longing for Creator to heal our land and broken hearts, RiverWind says of his objective for the book. The same longing is for our spirit to be uplifted from the only One who can give Hope in the face of utter defeat and despair. It is time for these stories to be shared with the world and for the prophecies to be listened to once again.

This is RiverWinds first book, and his wife, Laralyn, contributed heavily to the content. Both own and operate a successful all-natural skincare business: Native Touch. http://shop.nativetouch.us/ In addition, the couple is Native American Music Award winners and has produced several CDs fusing Native and Celtic music.

Thats What the Old Ones Say is published by Word Branch Publishing and can be purchased at the Word Branch online book shop, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and bookstores across the US. http://www.wordbranch.com/book-shop.html
