Stimulation of angiogenesis through Notch signaling reverses bone loss

Angiogenesis in bone and osteogenesis seem to be coupled. However, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms are largely unknown. A recent Nature publication identified a specific vessel subtype as the coupler of angiogenesis and osteogenesis in bone, which is significantly reduced in bones of aged animals. Another publication in the same issue of Nature further revealed Notch signaling as the underlying molecular mechanism that promotes angiogenesis in bone, which is opposite to the well-known function of Notch in other organs. Manipulation of these pathways was sufficient to restore age-associated loss of bone mass.
