The former General Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation, Román Arjona, highlighted the “collaborative” efforts of the sciences, a sector that “doesn’t have frontiers”.

Madrid, Spain, April 09, 2013 - The former General Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation, Román Arjona, highlighted the “collaborative” efforts of the sciences, a sector that “doesn’t have frontiers”.

During the inauguration of the “1st International Symposium: Spanish Science in the United Kingdom”, Arjona praised the role of Spanish research teams abroad. “Excellence, mobility and international collaboration form an integral part of the newStrategy as well as the R&D+I Plan and are closely linked to the European Strategy of Science, Technology and Innovation” he explained.

During his intervention, Arjona named CERU, an organisation that brings together Spanish talent and excellence in the United Kingdom, as a “key platform and gateway to the opportunities offered by the British scientific scene.” The 200 Spanish researchers who work under the umbrella of this organisation, created with an initiative of the Office of Cultural and Scientific Affairs from the Embassy of Spain in London, is also supported by the Ramón Areces Foundation and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT).

The general director of the Ramón Areces Foundation, Raimundo Pérez-Hernández y Torra, reiterated the institution’s support for the communities of Spanish scientists. He also noted the importance of public-private collaboration in sectors like science, “where the crisis should not be felt”.

New appointment

On April 5, Arjona was introduced as an advisor for Economic Affairs of the European Commission for Research and Innovation, whose mission is to guide the R&D policies of Member States in order to create growth and employment as established in the “Europe 2020” strategy. Additionally, it is pushing for the integration of R&D as one of the top policies of the European Union (in line with energy, health and transport) and for recognition of its contributions and the added economic value that research and development confers to these activities.
