Spanish Companies Revolutionise Film Distribution

The innovative system will be run through the Spanish Hispasat 1E satellite, thereby eliminating physical supports.

Madrid, Spain, April 12, 2013 - The innovative system will be run through the Spanish Hispasat 1E satellite, thereby eliminating physical supports.

A group of leading Spanish companies in the telecommunications and cinema industry have joined together to create an innovative Project tomodernise the distribution of cinematographic content. Initial estimates indicate that they could distribute 20,000 films and 30,000 trailers a year to 2,000 movie theatres.

It will be done using a Spanish satellite, the Hispasat 1E, making the distribution process faster and reducing the time needed to receive the film in the theatre. It also increases security by avoiding the risk of lost or damaged material.

The Hispasat 1E satellite is so strong, flexible and functional that it can distribute various types of content, from HD and 3D to a future Ultra High Definition (currently being developed). And the best part is that the wide coverage of the Hispasat satellites allows this solution to be extended throughout Europe and into the Americas.

This process is one more step in the technology of film distribution and support: from the heavy celluloid rolls to the digital supports currently in use – the Digital Cinema Package (DCP), in which it is necessary to make hundreds of copies – up to this system, which distributes the same film to all the theatres at the same time. The technology consists in sending a signal with the film to the Hispasat 1E satellite, from where it will be “rebound” to the antennas installed in the theatres once it has been amplified.

The first theatre to implement this system will be the Callao theatre in Madrid, one of the oldest in Spain, bringing together tradition and culture with the latest technology. The Hispasat Group – made up of Spanish and Latin American businesses – will be joined in the Callao theatre by the Spanish postproduction studio DeluxeSpain, telecommunications engineering firm Mome, and Ericsson, the world’s largest supplier of telecommunications equipment in the world.
