The Procedure for Prolapse and Hemorrhoids (PPH) has emerged as a very popular alternative treatment for Hemorrhoid. Although it is also a surgical procedure, it is very different from a conventional surgery of Hemorrhoids. This procedure is commonly referred to as a stapling procedure because it makes use of a special Hemorrhoidal Circular Stapler which is manufactured by Ethicon Endo-Surgery, a sub-division of Johnson & Johnson.
The procedure to PPH involves inserting the stapler instrument through the anus to reach the rectum. Thereafter, the prolapsing blood vessels which have swelled up and moved from their original position causing Hemorrhoids are pulled back to their original positions by removing a ring of excess tissue in the internal rectal lining. The rest of the Hemorrhoidal tissue is then stapled back in a circular fashion using titanium staples which do not need to be removed post operation but can harmlessly stay inside the rectum.
Unlike conventional surgery, the wound created in this procedure is inside the rectum and therefore does not cause the sharp shooting pain which outside wounds do. The surgery procedure generally takes less than 20 minutes and only a local spinal anaesthesia is given to the patient. Most patients would be capable of getting on their feet within a couple of hours after surgery and would even be discharged from the hospital the same day. Subsequently, 2-3 days of rest at home would be sufficient to help them recover from the surgery completely and return to normal life.
Although PPH has become a very popular treatment procedure for Hemorrhoids because of faster recovery and lesser post-operation pain, but it still remains a surgical procedure and therefore is accompanied by certain complications. The common complications faced by patients who undergo this treatment are a persistent urge to urinate, stricture or narrowing of back passage, pelvic infection and rectal bleeding. These complications occur in less than 5-8% of the patients who undergo PPH treatment. However, experts caution that if a patient experiences rectal bleeding as an after effect of the surgery, he should report that to his physician at the earliest as it could be a sign of colon cancer.
Colon cancer or colorectal cancer is a very common type of cancer which is often associated with Hemorrhoids. Experts suggest a colonoscopy every 4-5 years after the age of 50. Tips to avoid colon cancer include minimum consumption of alcohol, eating a fat free diet and avoiding smoking.
