Earlier this week in EastEnders it seems that a new star (or two) joined the EastEnders gang and they certainly left their mark.
Earlier this week in EastEnders it seems that a new star (or two) joined the EastEnders gang and they certainly left their mark. Bedbugs have appeared in The Queen Vic!
Having been kicked out by Phil Mitchell, Jean Slater offers Shirley a place to stay at the pub and after just a few nights Kat, Alfie and Baby Tommy found themselves itching. Kats mother Mo was the first to notice the red spots on Baby Tommy, and told Kate and Alfie. Kat then went to find Shirley shouting and screaming that she had bought the Bed Bugs into the house and she had to get out now.
Kat is later seen packing all of her and her families belongings to take to the Laundrette, and Alfie is on the phone to a pest control company who state it will take a week to go through the upstairs rooms and bar and kill all of the bedbugs.
While watching the programme, I felt there were a few bits that didnt make sense, so I called up James Gale, of JG Pest Control to find out what was fact and what was fiction in the soap world of EastEnders.
Question: Shirley stayed at the house above the pub a couple of nights, in this time she spread the bed bugs through out the rooms upstairs and the pub itself would this be possible in such a short amount of time? Answer: It is unlikely that they have been spread through the whole of upstairs, it usually would take at least a few weeks for this to happen and it would only usually happen quickly if belongings are moved from one room to another regularly. Question: Kat, Alfie and Baby Tommy have the bed bug bites, but Shirley does not have any bites would this be possible if it was her that bought the bed bugs into the house? Answer: This is possible; its extremely unlikely this would happen in 2 nights. But yes, different people react differently, we often find Miss A Girl will be bitten and Mr A Boy will claim they havent been despite sleeping in the same bed (and vice versa). However everyone would have actually been bitten, just Mr A Boy (in this case) has not reacted to the bites noticeably. Question: The pest control company they called said that it would take up to 1 week to go through the house and kill all the bed bugs would it take JG Pest Control this long to do a pub and upstairs rooms? Answer: No! It would take about 2 hours to carry out this treatment and may require a follow up second treatment a few weeks down the line. Question: The company also claimed that one person had to stay at home to act as bait for the bed bugs? Answer: It is good practice for people to sleep in the beds every night to act as bait (bed bugs will remain dormant when they cannot sense the CO2 in our breath and our body warmth- and therefore may not come out across the poison). At night, sleep in the beds, thats our recommendation. I think this clearly shows that poor old Alfie Moon should have shopped around more before choosing his pest control company. He is now closing the pub for a week and his family are moving into a hotel for the duration! Had he have gone with JG Pest Control, he would have only needed to close for 6 hours maximum, it could have been done before he opened the pub that day!
