producing prostaglandins Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen work by preventing the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme from producing prostaglandins C a class of molecules that induce inflammation, pain and fever. However, COX-2 inhibitors were reported to raise the risk of heart attack and stroke in patients taking them. While looking for alternatives to the production of safer painkillers, researchers discovered that inhibiting macrophage specific prostaglandin E synthase-1 enzyme resulted in a reduction in pain along with cardio vascular benefits in mice. |
