Indian Young Adults at High Risk of Reproductive Illnesses

By Sexologyconsultant on September 17 2015 | 442 Views

SexologyConsultant.com recently published the findings of a study on reproductive health in Indian young adult population conducted by its parent company, MediAngels.com.

The study looked at the reproductive behaviour of adolescents between the age group of 10-19 years, and found that most do not approach qualified doctors for they fear of being questioned and judged. After collating the answers to the questions in the study revealed that majority of those interviewed (51 per cent) presumed that doctors or the medical staff would be judgmental or even hostile on any enquiries related to sexuality or sexual health. Moreover, nearly a quarter of the respondents (22 per cent) believed that medical procedures were not safe while 15 per cent expressed the fear that their privacy and confidentiality would not be respected.

The research found that adolescents were being exposed to sexual experiences at an early age. In the aforementioned 10-24 years age group, over 6.5 per cent of boys and more than 1.3 per cent of girls revealed that they have had undergone sexual intercourse at least once. The average age of sexual contact was 14.09 years for boys and 13.72 years for girls, while the average age for first incident was 15.25 years for boys and 16.66 years for girls.

In the earlier days, the age at which people got married was 14-15 or at the most 18-19 years. At that time, there was nothing to stimulate their sexual desires; no television or internet. However now, the average marrying age is higher maybe around 30 years. Therefore, people indulge in sex at an earlier age, to experiment. Also, at the age of 13-15 years release of sexual hormones such as Testosterone develops attraction amongst individuals for the opposite sex, says Dr. Debraj Shome, a well-known Facial Plastic Surgeon and CEO, MediAngels.com.

About SexologyConsultant.com
SexologyConsultant.com is a dedicated website launched by MediAngels.com to provide access to unbiased, non-judgmental and trustworthy expert medical opinion on sexual health and wellness. The site seeks to bridge the gap between the findings of a MediAngels.com study which revealed that more people are having sex at an early age and the reluctance in India to talk about the subject or educate the youth. It seeks to provide professional guidance on sex and educate the youth about safe sexual practices since the subject remains a taboo topic among Indians. The site offers information from leading sexologists which can be accessed by adolescents from the privacy of their homes.
