According to CBS New York, drug use is on the rise, at least for one generation. Baby boomers, or those born between 1946 and 1964, have seemed to have fallen back into old habits as the stress of aging and looming retirement grows closer.

The CDC has also released a report that indicated 5 percent of the 78 million baby boomers have admitted to using and abusing drugs and that number shows no signs of slowing down. Additionally, the report shows that the number of people over 50 who admit to seeking treatment for heroin, cocaine, and prescription drug abuse has increased exponentially since 1992.

"You have to remember, this is the hippie generation," says one CBS reporter. "These kids grew up taking drugs recreationally. Unfortunately, some of them never stopped. And for those who did, they simply went back to drugs and alcohol as a way to cope with the stresses of getting older and of their looming retirement."

Some experts believe that the increase in drug use has nothing to do with impending retirement or even the stresses of daily living. Dr. Carise of Phoenix House believes that it has far more to do with the lack of regular social interaction that drives many baby boomers to using drugs. "While I fully subscribe to the notion that baby boomers are using drugs to cope with stress, I think its much more likely that many of them are simply dealing with loneliness and isolation. Many have divorced and become estranged from their families. Friends have grown apart and this leaves them vulnerable to depression. Drugs offer them the ability to escape their loneliness, at least for a little while."
