First Transportable System to Protect Refugee Centres

Indra is heading the European R&D+i Basylis project, the only autonomous system using multiple sensors, which can be quickly and easily deployed.

Madrid, Spain, July 18, 2013 - Indra is heading the European R&D+i Basylis project, the only autonomous system using multiple sensors, which can be quickly and easily deployed.

Indra has completed development of its transportable perimeter security system, which has been designed to meet the security requirements of refugee centres and critical infrastructures in remote locations.

The complex internal organisation of camps and the large areas covered by some critical facilities, such as gas pipelines and electricity lines, pose a challenge in ensuring security. This is why Indra has designed a system that can be deployed in just a few hours, with an independent power source so it can be used in places without an electricity supply. The system combines radar, laser radar (Ladar), acoustic sensors and remote ground sensors.

The development of this solution – validated by Spain’s National Centre for the Protection of Critical Infrastructure (CNPIC) – is part of the European BASYLIS R&D+i Project being promoted by the European Commission within the Seventh Framework Programme, which has been led by Indra. It has been developed over the past two years with a budget of €3 million.

An example of its detection capacity can be seen in the fact that its radar can identify vehicles at a distance of up to six kilometres, while the sensors installed underground can detect a person walking 25 metres away. A camera system can be used to track any incident. Behaviour detection software is used to process the information gathered and identify risk situations, such as stampedes, panic situations or large crowds that can pose a risk in refugee camps, which can contain up to 10,000 people.

This technology demonstrates the leadership capacity of Indra, which offers systems that are used today to protect airports, ports, railways, energy and telecommunications companies, financial institutions, corporate buildings and head offices and large industrial facilities in various countries.
