Extra Mile Day Momentum Soars to 420 Cities

Cities from across the United States are recognizing a passionate movement that is dedicated to encouraging individuals and organizations to go the extra mile in service and volunteerism.

Los Angeles, CA, October 02, 2014 -- Cities from across the United States are recognizing a passionate movement that is dedicated to encouraging individuals and organizations to go the extra mile in service and volunteerism. On November 1, over 500 mayors from across the United States are expected to declare Extra Mile Day.

At a time when many are demanding changes in service and opportunity, Extra Mile Day celebrates individuals and organizations that have chosen to create positive change in their communities by going the extra mile. Created in 2009 with 23 cities making the inaugural declaration, Extra Mile Day has continued to build enthusiastic momentum each year since. This year, 500 mayors from Honolulu to Boston will make the unique declaration.

Mayor Shari Winstead of Shoreline, Washington, is one of those mayors. I truly understand the benefit of how important volunteer contributions are to a citys overall well being and health. There is no way we could provide or maintain the high level of quality services residents expect without the help of volunteers going the extra mile to make their community stronger.

Mayor Jeff Meyers of Shawnee, Kansas, is another participating mayor who passionately believes in the go the extra mile mission: In my role as a mayor, teacher and coach, I know that it takes dedicated people going the extra mile to move a community and team forward. We cannot help but want to go the extra mile, too, when we witness those who go the extra mile day after day to make our communities and organizations great.

"We all talk about wanting positive change and more opportunity," says Extra Mile Day Founder and motivational guru, Shawn Anderson. "However, relying on others to make that happen is only wishing for life to get better. Taking personal responsibility and going the extra mile personally is where true change is created.

"Sure, its easy to complain about everything we see going on around us, Anderson says. "The ’go the extra mile’ message, though, gives people an alternative to just throwing their arms in the air and saying ’I give up.’ Extra Mile Day is a small reminder of the power we each have to create positive change at any time on any day.
