Madrid, Spain, April 04, 2013 - The company began construction of the plant in 2010, and will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of it for a 25 year period.
With the desalination plant in Qingdao, the second largest commercial port in China, Abengoa forecasts revenues of 750 million euros from the sale of water and an additional 25 million for technical support operations in a 25 year period. The plant will generate 100,000 cubic metres of drinking water a day from sea water, sufficient to supply the needs of half a million people.
This was the first desalination project completely financed by local Chinese Banks and required a total investment of 135 million euros. With the new desalination plant, Abengoa increases its installed capacity for water desalination to almost 1,100,000 m3 per day, sufficient to supply drinking water needs to more than 8 million people.
The Spanish company notes that this new plant in China consolidates its position as a world leader in the water sector, and it has already developed desalination plants in Algeria, Ghana, India and Spain.
