A Spaniard is Named as Director of the Transplantation Programme at the WHO

Madrid, Spain, April 08, 2013 - José Ramón Núñez será la máxima autoridad en la División de Trasplantes de la Organización Mundial de la Salud.
On April 7 the world celebrated World Health Day and Spain did so with the appointment of a Spaniard to lead the Transplantation Programme of the World Health Organization (WHO). José Ramón Núñez, former transplant coordinator at the Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid, joined the Transplantation Programme of the WHO this past December following a proposal from the Spanish National Transplant Organization (ONT) which is headed by Rafael Matesanz.
Matesanz has been appointed WHO advisor on transplant material. He will form part of an international team of experts in various fields of health which the WHO and its director, Margaret Chan, are creating in order to advise in emergency situations. This movement is part of an international policy to combine efforts in order to confront the globalisation of health problems.
The appointments of Nuñez and Matesanz are recognition of the excellence of the Spanish transplant system, which is one of the best representatives of the Marca España around the globe and which has promoted transplants worldwide according to the ethical principles of the Spanish transplant system.
In fact, in 2006 the WHO named Spain as the headquarters for the Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation, and in 2008 named the ONT as a WHO Collaborating Centre. Spain was also invited to participate in the Global Transplant Strategy, which has provided significant growth in the use of these treatments around the world, most notably in Latin America, and in the fight against organ trafficking and transplant tourism worldwide.
